St. Pete Beach, FL
🏖️ A Brief History of St. Pete Beach
St. Pete Beach is one of Florida’s most iconic coastal communities, known for its soft white sand beaches, scenic sunsets, and laid-back lifestyle. Situated on Long Key, a barrier island along the Gulf of Mexico, the area wasn’t always a single city but rather a collection of small beach towns. (Wikipedia)
From Barrier Island to Beach Towns
In the early 1900s, visitors were drawn to the pristine shoreline and gentle Gulf waters, and small residential cottages and businesses began to appear along the island. Over time, this stretch of paradise became a destination for both seasonal visitors and year-round residents alike. (St. Pete Beach Today)
One of the most enduring symbols of this era is the Don CeSar Hotel — often called the “Pink Palace” — which opened in 1928. Built as a luxury resort, it quickly became a glamorous stop for travelers and has remained a beloved landmark ever since. (Herzwurm Homes)
Becoming a City
Before 1957, the island was made up of several separate municipalities — including Pass-a-Grille, Don CeSar Place, Belle Vista, and St. Petersburg Beach — along with unincorporated parts of Pinellas County. In July of that year, after a remarkably close vote (decided by just five ballots), these communities united under one government to form the City of St. Petersburg Beach. (St. Pete Beach)
Decades later, in 1994, residents voted to shorten the city’s name to St. Pete Beach to reduce confusion with the nearby city of St. Petersburg and better reflect the community’s distinct identity. (St. Pete Beach)
A Destination With Character
Today, St. Pete Beach blends historic charm with modern amenities — from the vibrant shops and restaurants along Corey Avenue to world-class resorts and waterfront living. Locals and visitors alike enjoy miles of sandy beaches, cultural attractions, and the relaxed Florida Gulf Coast vibe that defines this beautiful community.
