🏝️ A Brief History of Treasure Island
Treasure Island is one of Pinellas County’s most recognizable Gulf Coast communities, known for its wide sandy beaches, iconic waterfront homes, and classic Florida charm. Located on a barrier island between St. Pete Beach and Madeira Beach, Treasure Island has a colorful past that blends early development, tourism, and a strong coastal identity.
From Barrier Island to Visionary Development
In the early 20th century, Treasure Island was largely undeveloped mangrove land and barrier shoreline. Its transformation began in the 1930s, when real estate developer A.C. “Cap” Hamlin purchased large portions of the island. Hamlin envisioned a master-planned beach community built around canals, waterfront lots, and a distinctive tropical aesthetic.
To attract buyers and visitors, Hamlin promoted the island using a pirate-themed marketing campaign, giving Treasure Island its name and playful identity. Streets were laid out, canals were dredged, and waterfront homesites quickly became a major draw for those seeking life along the Gulf of Mexico.
Incorporation and Growth
Treasure Island was officially incorporated in 1955, as development accelerated following World War II. The city grew as a mix of residential neighborhoods, beach resorts, and commercial corridors, becoming both a year-round community and a popular vacation destination.
One of the city’s most recognizable landmarks, the Treasure Island Clock Tower, was completed in 1954 and remains a symbol of the city’s mid-century growth and character.
A Coastal Community With Lasting Appeal
Today, Treasure Island balances its rich history with modern coastal living. Residents and visitors enjoy miles of beachfront, waterfront parks, boating access, and a walkable beach town atmosphere. From classic canal homes to newer elevated construction and redevelopment opportunities, Treasure Island continues to evolve while preserving the charm that has defined it for generations.
